Hunt says Broncos must get season back on track

BRONCOS halfback Ben Hunt believes there are no excuses as his team looks to turn around its spluttering season – starting against the Rabbitohs at ANZ Stadium tomorrow night.

After winning seven of its first eight games this year, Brisbane has lost five of its past six in the gruelling Origin period to drop to sixth on the NRL ladder.

The Broncos have been minus Queensland representatives Corey Oates, Matt Gillett, Sam Thaiday, Corey Parker and Josh McGuire for three rounds during the Origin period, and at other times have had to back up and play in the NRL only a matter of days after each of the three highly physical interstate clashes.

Brisbane has still had the services of classy halves pairing Hunt and Anthony Milford, with both banned from playing for the Maroons in 2016 after breaking curfew during the Emerging Origin camp earlier this year.

“Origin isn’t an excuse because we go through it every year. Last year we went through it really well,” Hunt said, with the Broncos beaten grand finalists in 2015.

“We are about to get the whole squad back together and that’s when things start to gel a bit more.

“Everyone gets back into training and it’s great having the same people around every week and not losing people every couple of weeks.”

The Rabbitohs – the 2014 premiers – are in a crisis.

They have slipped to 12th on the ladder with just five wins for the season.

South Sydney has lost 11 games in 2016, with one of those a 30-8 thrashing to Brisbane in round eight.
