Hughes is contracted
IT was always going to be a fait accompli after his stunning debut in South Africa but Macksville's Phillip Hughes now has the security of a contract from Cricket Australia behind him.
Hughes was one of six players to be awarded their first Cricket Australia contract yesterday alongside Callum Ferguson, Graham Manou, Marcus North, Andrew McDonald and Peter Siddle.
The contracted players are paid a base retainer, which is levelled according to a player ranking system decided by the National Selection Panel (NSP). Each player also receives match fees, tour fees and prize money for on-field success.
“It's obviously a very exciting time for players receiving their first contract, such as Phillip Hughes, who has had an outstanding start for Australia and will have an important role in the team's future,” NSP chairman Andrew Hilditch said yesterday.
Australia's Ashes squad will be announced on Wednesday.
