Huge fire in East London destroys upmarket properties

A HUGE fire has broken out at a brand new block of flats in East London.

Flames have engulfed the roof of the Bow Wharf building, which is under construction, close to Bethnal Green and Mile End.

The block is a brand new "residential waterside development", where five houses and 19 apartments are set to sell for as much as one million pounds ($1.6 million dollars).

Nobody is inside the building, London Fire Brigade said, reports The Sun .

It comes after the deadly Grenfell Tower fire in west London two weeks ago claimed up to 80 lives.

Some 181 high-rise buildings have failed safety tests carried out after a fire that killed at least 80 people in London last month, the British government says.

Officials are conducting tests on some 600 highrise buildings across England after fire ravaged the residential Grenfell Tower block in west London on June 14.

The Department for Communities said in a statement that the cladding from 181 high-rise buildings in 51 local authority areas had failed tests.

An eyewitness said solar panels on top of the building appeared to have caught fire.

He wrote on Twitter: "Brand new building not finished so no one in it. But it's caught inside now.

"Whole thing going to go up."

He added: "Looks like solar panels caught alight."

At least half of the roof is thought to have been destroyed.

Another witness said: "Crikey, hope no one has moved in yet."

Nolan MacGregor told the Metro.co.uk: "The canal walkway has been blocked off by firemen.

"There was one fire engine that I could see on the bridge, south of the building. There were two firemen on the actual canal pathway itself.

"People seemed to be really shocked, I heard a few people shouting 'Oh my God' and all."

London Fire Brigade said: "Twelve fire engines and around 80 firefighters and officers have been called to a fire at a building under construction on Bow Wharf, Wennington Road E3.

"The fourth floor and roof of the five storey residential block are alight.

"The Brigade was called at 11.10am (local time). Crews from Bethnal Green, Homerton, Shadwell, Shoreditch, Whitechapel, Poplar, Millwall and other surrounding fire stations are at the scene. The cause of the fire is not known at this stage."
