IF THERE was one bit of advice Kirsty Train would give to anyone looking at a non-traditional career, it would be to never give up.

That and don't lick your fingers.

The second piece of advice is more for people in her own chosen field of plumbing and gas fitting, though.

Mrs Train was a stay-at-home mum of three kids when she and her husband began discussing the need for an extra income a decade ago.

As a Christian, she always prayed for guidance, so when they were moving into their new property and she eyed off the massive plumbing job ahead, she felt inspiration hit like a message from God.

She sought out a plumber who would give her a go as an apprentice and got started on getting her qualifications.

It was a move that led to her being the only currently practising female plumber in Toowoomba.

She said she loved her job at AJ's Plumbing and Gas, but warned getting there was no easy ride.

She was the only woman in her Tafe course, but luckily she fitted in fine, both as the "mum" of the group and as someone who can tell a pretty mean joke.

She also found herself pregnant with her fourth child only months into the course and had nowhere to turn for advice.

In the end, she pursued the course with a growing bump and even passed the scaffolding practical while six months pregnant, all despite staff suggesting she quit and try again later.

She said understanding her limitations was important in the job and suggested looking towards your strengths.

"I'm only little so I have to figure out how to do things smart or lever things in a different way," she said.

"If you want to do something, just do it, and that's the same whether it's guys or girls.

"Don't care what other people say.

"Just keep at it and don't let yourself be defined by what other people think."
