Horses and cattle in battle of wits at Glenreagh

RECENTLY reformed Glenreagh Team Penners will hold a twilight event today at the recreation grounds.

The comeback event on October 31 attracted 50 riders with ages ranging from five to 65, with enthusiasts travelling from Macksville, Bowraville and Grafton to compete in this fast growing horse sport.

Spokesperson Shaunagh Willman said today’s meeting starts with barrel racing, followed by others with the traditional flavour of rodeo and competitive equestrian events.

“Team penning is a fast paced event that gives a team of three riders on horseback two minutes to separate three specifically identified cattle from a herd of 30,” she said.

“The aim is to put the cattle into a 5m x 7.5m pen through a 3m opening at the opposite end of the arena.

“Teamwork is the key with all three riders working in harmony to cut out the correct cattle and drive them into the pen while keeping the rest of the herd back.”
