Horrifying 1996 cold case reopens as woman charged

Cairns detectives have charged a 43-year-old woman in relation to to the death of a child whose body was discovered at a property more than 20 years ago.

The child's body was discovered at a property on Haywood Street on May 4, 1996, but despite a lengthy investigation at the time, the case remained unsolved.

The torso of the baby boy, believed to be no more than 48 hours old, was found on the driveway of the home.

Police at the time believed the baby had been drowned, cut in half with a sharp instrument and dumped.

The torso was believed to have been dragged to the driveway by dogs and the lower half of the boy's body was never found.

Despite a lengthy investigation by police, the case remained unsolved until a recent appeal to the public for information.

As a result of that appeal, the 43-year-old Cairns woman was arrested and charged at Cairns Police Station yesterday.

The woman has been charged with one count each of manslaughter, misconduct with regards to a corpse and concealing the birth of a child.

The woman has been refused police bail and will appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court today
