Hoping for some more Cup glory

IF popular mare Sofin wins Friday's Coffs Harbour Gold Cup, it might prove to be the best $6000 owner Byron Fegan has ever spent.

Fegan bought Sofin for that amount as a yearling as part of the Nathan Tinkler reduction sale at the Magic Millions on the Gold Coast.

Since then the Casino Prince six-year-old has given the owner and Bowraville trainer Shannon Fry quite the ride.

Sofin already has one cup under her belt this year after winning the Port Macquarie Cup and went very close to winning the South Grafton and Wauchope Cups.

The mare finished fourth in last year's Coffs Harbour Gold Cup behind Our Boy Nicholas but Fry is eyeing off an improved effort on Friday.

Sofin won't have the race all her own way though.

Kim Waugh will be bringing up Dylan's Rojo for the big race and has engaged the services of jockey Mitch Bell for the ride.

Newcastle hoop Andrew Gibbons will be riding Egyptian Ruler for Ken Lantry while Mack Griffith will be hoping Aaron Bullock can steer Binalong Road to victory.

Local hopes could rest with the Brett Doson trained Ekibuuka or last start winner Kareem's Edge with Paul Smith plotting a win for the gelding.

The final fields for Friday's meeting won't be known until this afternoon but a full field of 16 runners plus emergencies is expected for the big race which is being run at 4.40pm.
