ONLINE readers have named a number of Coffs Coast streets they believe to be frequented by hoon drivers, in the hopes of making our roads safer.

Reckless driving isn't uncommon, with hoons regularly called out in our Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down section.

Coffs Harbour Highway Patrol supervisor Sergeant Jarrod Langan said a hoon is anyone who drives recklessly by way of speed, manner of driving, or other behaviours such as hanging arms out of windows.

"We've recently been cracking down on this sort of behaviour and we've had some pleasing results with some matters already before the courts," Sgt Langan said.

"Lengthy disqualification periods have been handed out to those who participate in that sort of behaviour."

Sgt Langan said while police were on the lookout for reckless drivers everywhere, there were definitely some streets that attracted more hoons than others.

"There are definitely hotspots and areas that are more prone to that sort of behaviour.

"They generally tend to be areas that are quieter and less populated like industrial estates, but they forget there are people who do live in these areas.

"People's peace and quiet is being disturbed by this kind of behaviour but I want to emphasise, this behaviour is also extremely dangerous.

"Not only is it illegal but it's dangerous and too many times this sort of behaviour ends in tragedy."

Sgt Langan encouraged residents to report reckless drivers to Crime Stoppers on 1800333000.

He said while information could be left anonymously, those willing to give an official statement or provide details such as car registration numbers would help with prosecution.
