Homosexuality should be classed as 'mental disorder': Nile

IF GAY marriage is legalised in NSW, there will be a push for child brides and polygamists to have the same rights, the state's top Christian politician has sensationally claimed.

In his submission to the NSW Parliamentary Inquiry into same-sex marriage, Christian Democrats MLC Rev Fred Nile says the homosexual lifestyle is "incompatible" with marriage and the wellbeing of society.

He goes on to say homosexuality should still be classed as a "mental disorder" and compares the equal rights campaign to calls from the Muslim community to change laws to recognise marriage with "up to four wives".

He also suggests "homiage" and "lesiage" could be alternative terms available to "those homosexuals" who want to define their relationships.

The controversial comments provide a contrast to the majority of responses from other church and lobby groups.

A submission from Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays argues that not allowing same-sex marriage discriminates against people on the basis of a characteristic over which they have no control - their sexual orientation.

It also says that as marriage is a universally recognised institution, excluding same sex-couples "sends a message that it's okay to discriminate against gay people in other areas of life".

A record number of submissions have been made to the inquiry, which is expected to lead to an equal marriage being tabled in NSW Parliament later this year.

On Tuesday night more than 1200 people had weighed into the debate.

A report is expected back next week.
