Hockey wins $200k in defamation suit against Fairfax

TREASURER Joe Hockey has been awarded $200,000 in damages from Fairfax Media after it was ruled an article headline and social media posts defamed him.

Federal Court judge Richard White found a Sydney Morning Herald headline which read 'Treasurer for sale' and two tweets posted by its Fairfax Media stablemate The Age defamed the Treasurer.

The article reported he sold access to Liberal Party donors through an organisation called the North Sydney Forum, a Liberal Party fundraising body.

At the time the article was published, Mr Hockey's office issued a statement saying: "Any suggestion that the Treasurer is for sale is offensive and repugnant."
