Hockey makes last-minute plea for budget help
TREASURER Joe Hockey has made a last-minute plea to the Senate crossbench and Labor to help the government with its "budget repair" task.
Mr Hockey used a speech on the final day of parliamentary sittings for the year to appeal to the upper house and Opposition for a "more mature" approach to repairing the budget.
After disappointing national accounts out this week, Mr Hockey said the current economic environment "reinforces the importance of getting the budget back in order".
His speech comes as the he prepares to release the government's financial system inquiry report and the mid-year budget update, which is expected in coming weeks.
Mr Hockey also hit out at what he called "blanket opposition and mindless resistance" to the government's agenda.
Making the case for economic reform, Mr Hockey said complacency was the enemy and cited the Australian middle class as a key "growth opportunity".
