Hitchhikers bash teen driver before stealing his car
A TEEN who picked up two hitchhikers was bashed, forced to escape from his car and left stranded on the side of the road after he was car-jacked in a vicious attack at the weekend.
About 10pm Saturday, a Murwillumbah man, 18, was travelling through Keilvale when two men flagged him down for a ride.
Tweed-Byron crime co-ordinator Stuart Crawford said the two men punched and kicked the driver until he managed to escape from the car.
"He managed to contact friends to come pick him up and take him to Murwillumbah hospital," Sergeant Crawford said.
On Sunday, police were able to track down the stolen gold Holden Gemini at a Reserve-Creek Rd, Murwillumbah address.
Shortly after they spotted one of the alleged attackers walking down the street.
Police arrested and charged a 20-year-old man with aggravated robbery, car jacking, assault occasioning bodily harm, stealing a motor vehicle and malicious damage.
Sgt Crawford said the man was bail refused and would appear at Tweed Heads Local Court today.
The alleged co-accused is still on the run and police are trying to locate him.
The teen suffered non-life threatening back and head injuries after the attack.
