Hitch-hiker hit on Pacific Highway

A WOMAN is undergoing surgery today after she was struck by a car on the Pacific Highway at Woolgoolga.

The Woolgoolga 25-year-old was hitch-hiking on the eastern side of the highway about 100 metres south of Arkan Avenue at 7.40pm last night when the accident happened.

Police said the woman, who was wearing black clothing, was crossing the road when she was hit by a northbound red Mitsubishi Pajero.

The driver, a Woolgoolga 42-year-old, had swerved to avoid a collision, investigators said.

The woman was knocked to the road and was unconscious. Police and paramedics dashed to the scene and the woman was taken to Coffs Harbour Health Campus.

She had sustained a broken left thighbone, extensive cuts and bruises and a head injury and was scheduled for surgery.

Police inquiries into the accident continue.
