Gympie woman dies in horror highway crash at Pomona

UPDATE: 6.30AM 

THE woman killed in a crash on the Bruce Highway has been identified as a Gympie resident. 

The 59-year-old was killed in a crash on the Bruce Hwy near Pomona during a severe storm last night. 

Police were called to debris on the highway and when they arrived, they were faced with a two vehicle traffic crash. 

The woman died on the scene.

Traffic was brought to a standstill by the two-car crash just before 6pm in the southbound lanes, but later re-opened just after midnight. 

Investigations into the cause continue. 

 

UPDATE 7.45PM:  

AN elderly woman has died in a car crash on the Bruce Highway just north of Pomona during a severe storm which lashed the region this evening. 

Traffic was brought to standstill about 6pm after the crash. 

An elderly woman was pronounced dead at the scene. 

One man was taken to hospital with what was described by Queensland Ambulance Service as moderate injuries and another was not injured. 

The circumstances of the crash were not clear, but it was believed at least one of the vehicles struck a tree lying on the road. 

Diversions are still in place.

EARLIER: 

Police are at the scene of a serious traffic crash on the Bruce Highway north of Pomona.

Initial investigations suggest that around 5.45pm police received calls about a tree across the highway upon arrival police came across a two vehicle traffic crash in the southbound lanes.   

The highway is currently closed in both directions between Pomona and Federal. Diversions are in place and police are asking motorists to avoid the area.   

There is no further information available at this stage.
