Hess Express powers towards Origin call-up

NORTH Queensland's Coen Hess has showed once again why he deserves to be in the Maroons Origin selection frame after playing a key role in his side's gritty 20-8 win over Gold Coast on Saturday night.

In what was a largely dour contest, the Cowboys powerhouse scored a crucial try shortly after the break to give his side momentum which carried them through to fulltime.

There had been calls for Hess to be blooded in the Origin arena and they only intensified after the Maroons' heavy loss to NSW in the series opener.

The Blues' interchange provided plenty of impact in game one, something their interstate counterparts struggled with.

On Saturday, Hess showed he could be that kind of player, running for 123 metres, as well as making four tackle busts and one linebreak which led to his try.

When asked on Super Saturday whether he felt he was ready for Origin football, Hess replied: "Personally, I don't think so.   "I'm just trying to focus on playing good footy for the Cowboys and I think we put in a pretty good performance tonight."
