Hero recognised for effort

A BIG-HEARTED hero of the Coffs Coast will be recognised for his tireless efforts in saving lives when he receives a Helping People Award from the NRMA on Monday.

Geoff Hicks is a retired ambulance officer who helped establish Glenreagh Heartstart, a back up service people can call in an emergency that alerts a network of volunteers who are trained and equipped to respond quickly and lend assistance.

Putting his 27 years of ambulance experience to use, Mr Hicks and a group of volunteers set about raising funds to equip an emergency response team as an interim first-aid service, and Glenreagh Heartstart was established in 2001.

For his efforts, Mr Hicks will receive a Helping People Award as well as $5000 towards the work of the charity and a share of $20,000 worth of international and domestic travel. A spokesperson for NRMA said the award recognises 'big-hearted heroes in the community and the tireless efforts of volunteers'.
