CUTTING edge technology has come to the Coffs Coast.

Coffs Cardiology and Coffs Harbour Radiology are now offering a new CT Coronary Angiography service.

For local man Daniel Marinic, the simple scan was literally a life saver.

"I had no symptoms for a blocked artery," he said.

"But it turned out one of my arteries was blocked - I was a walking time bomb."

The new technology is an advance on traditional CAT scanning that allows images to be taken inside the arteries of a patient's heart.

"General practitioners refer patients to us if they show worrying symptoms like chest pains or breathlessness, or if they have risk factors like family history of heart disease or diabets, or if they're smokers," interventional cardiologist Dr David Henderson said.

"The service we're now offering is as good or better than in many metropolitan centres - it's a fantastic thing for the region."

With coronary artery disease still the biggest killer of Australians, access to the new technology is a boon for locals.
Mr Marinic said he'd encourage people to make use of it.

"I'd be saying to them, maybe they should be talking to their doctors about the scan. I may not have won the lottery, but I do have my life."
