Heater safety warning to families

AS THE chilly weather continues, Children's Health Queensland is urging Ipswich families to be careful around domestic heaters to avoid an unwanted trip to the emergency department.

In the past two months, 15 children have been treated at the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital for burns caused by contact with a gas, wood or electric heater.

Kidsafe Queensland CEO Susan Teerds said parents could take simple precautions to try to prevent heater-related burns in the home.

"Parents should keep a clear space of one metre around heaters and securely screen fireplaces and combustion stoves," she said.

"Even when there is a screen, children should never be left alone in a room with any type of heater."
