A WOMAN was punched in the face and dragged to a car in a terrifying broad daylight kidnapping attempt in Sydney's inner west.

The 27-year-old was walking along Burwood Crescent heading towards Burwood train station when, police say, the man approached and spoke to her shortly after 10am on Sunday.

The woman tried to walk around the man when he grabbed her, pulling her towards a Holden Captiva parked on the opposite side of the road.

Police said the man punched the woman in the face and threw her into the rear of the car.

A witness driving passed stopped to help the woman, who ran from the vehicle and the man drove off.

Burwood Police are still looking for the man who is described as being aged in his 20s, of caucasian appearance, about 180-190cm tall with a muscular build, who was wearing a dark blue coat at the time.

However, they have warned members of the public not to go near him.

The SUV used in the attack was carrying Queensland number plates 362RUL
