Raw ‘bath milk’ farce will not wash in NSW

HEALTH food shops marketing raw milk as "cosmetic" or "bath" milk have been warned the NSW Food Authority will pour their stocks down the drain.

Officers swooping on Sydney stores have seized 67 litres of unpasteurised dairy products, and they say more raids are coming.

Primary Industries Minister Niall Blair said claims the product is used for bathing would not wash.

"While there are no food businesses in NSW licensed by the NSW Food Authority to produce raw milk for cosmetic purposes, we know that some retailing businesses are sourcing this product from elsewhere to sell it," Mr Blair said.

"Raw milk is a high food safety risk - the sale of raw milk for human consumption is illegal in Australia and this kind of farcical deception won't be tolerated.

"It was apparent to the NSW Food Authority that the sale of raw milk products at these premises was not for cosmetic reasons."

Tests on the recent seizures found elevated levels of E. coli present.

The crackdown follows the death of a Melbourne toddler who was fed unprocessed milk last year.

Anyone with information about raw milk being sold should report it to he NSW Food Authority on 1300 552 406.
