Harris backs Usman Khawaja to claim No.3 Test spot

FORMER fast bowler Ryan Harris has backed Usman Khawaja to make the No.3 spot his own if he is selected today in the Australian team for the first Test against New Zealand.

Harris said the Queensland batsman was well placed to get an opportunity last year before injuring his knee, and showed on the recent tour of India with Australia A he was ready to step up.

"The injury last year - he was having a great Matador Cup and was going well in the Shield and then did his knee, so he was real disappointed with that," Harris told APN.

"One thing I have seen is that his rehab has been very particular - he's done everything he can and dotted the Is and crossed the Ts to make sure he was ready for this season. He's a pretty cool character Uz, nothing seems to bother him.

"Hopefully he gets his opportunity and he can stay there for a long time."
