Harold continues happy work

SOME may know him as Happy Harold, others as Healthy Harold, either way he’s the happy, healthy mascot of the largest drug and health education program outside of government.

The Life Education program, a registered charity, has been running in schools for 32 years and thanks to a $90,000 sponsorship deal with Holiday Coast Credit Union, will continue educating primary school kids from Woolgoolga to Taree.

The sponsorship will see the program through the next three years.

In addition to thanking the Holiday Coast Credit Union, program operators gathered at C.ex Coffs on Thursday to thank Coffs Harbour clubs for donating $14,000 over the past three years under the Community Development Support Expenditure Scheme and council for towing the mobile learning centre.

From your own Healthy Harold experience, you may remember plastic vegetables stuck to Velcro walls or a roof covered in lights, making a starry night when the main lights are cut, (always met with delighted squeals) and the visit is always a memorable one.

Ceri Wrobel has been teaching in the mobile classroom for 12 years and said the children loved Healthy Harold.

“They are given drug education and are shown how to lead healthy lifestyles,” Ms Wrobel said.

“The aim is to help children understand they need to make their own decisions while having lots of fun.”

Coffs Harbour MP Andrew Fraser is an ambassador for the program and met with his old friend Healthy Harold on Thursday.

“It’s good to see you Harold and I commend the work you do educating children about the dangers of drugs,” he said.
