Hardy to take a hand in Grafton Cup

TRAINER Joanne Hardy will attempt to emulate Coffs Harbour "stablemate” Sally Taylor by winning tomorrow's Grafton Cup.

Taylor captured the coveted prize in 2016 with Rednav and Hardy has English import Collaboration engaged and Gold Coast jockey Laura Cheshire booked for the ride.

Another Coffs Coast riding champion, Glen Colless, won on the gelding on June 14 but after a last start failure in the Cup Prelude has switched to the Chris Waller entrant Tumultuous who will need luck to win from the outside gate.

Coffs will have a connection of sorts in today's Ramornie Handicap through outsider Got Unders.

When formerly trained by Ken Lantry the horse was an unlucky runner-up in 2015 in both the Sawtell and Coffs Harbour Gold Cups and if he performs well today for new trainer Jay Hopkins will likely tackle the same campaign next month.

Brett Dodson has Sawtell engaged in today's Grafton Guineas and probably has the best chance of all of bringing some of the spoils back south.

The July Carnival has already produced the probable early favourite for the Coffs Harbour Gold Cup.

Rising Port Macquarie-trained star Cogliere staged a barnstorming win in last Sunday's South Grafton Cup and trainer Marc Quinn has the horse in line for the 54th Coffs Cup on August 2 as part of an ambitious plan of race starts over the next 12 months.
