Happy Herbs hitting a year

IT'S been an interesting year for city centre retailers, none more so than The Happy Herb Shop, which celebrates its first birthday on July 24.

It's owned and operated by Jonny and Sand Mew who say the shop is literally their dream coming into reality.

"We've both been working for Happy Herbs for many years, having started in West End in Brisbane, both as students of natural medicine and then going on to manage the Cairns store before finally deciding to open up here in Coffs Harbour," Jonny said.

"Our vision was to create a friendly community hub where people can feel comfortable to come in for a chat any time, especially to learn about natural medicine."

Jonny and Sand said they were trying to provide an interface between the mainstream and alternative culture.

"Because the nature of our business is quite different from the norm, we've had to work hard to get some more conservative folk in town into the door to see what we're really all about, but once they do they realise it's not scary at all," Jonny said.

Not only can Jonny tell you about each of the 150 herbs in stock, Sand - a trained naturopath, herbalist and reflexologist - will consult with you on which ones you need for your specific health circumstances.

It is a labour of love for the pair, who say they feel positive despite a tough first year.

"We absolutely love this region and that's why we chose to come here to start our business," Jonny said.

"With word of mouth spreading now in a positive way we feel really optimistic about the future."

The Happy Herb Shop is having a birthday party on Tuesday, July 24, 5-7pm.

"If you mention this interview we'll give you a 10% discount until the end of the month," Jonny said.

"Or else just come along and enjoy the music and some herbal punch."
