Hannah off to study in Oxford
FROM Alstonville to Oxford inEngland, 23-year-old Hannah Wills has not one but two cheques to cover her studies at the prestigious Oxford University later this year.
Dr Wills landed in the United Kingdom over the weekend for aholiday, but when she heads back in October she’ll be heading to Oxford University thanks to two scholarships.
Firstly she was awarded the 2011-2012 Rotary Academic Year Ambassadorial Scholarship for $27,000 to study at Oxford.
She applied for the scholarship through the Rotary Club of Lismore West, beating applications from 55 clubs within District 9640, which covers an area as far north as Warwick, Queensland, west to Glen Innes and south to Grafton.
While 700 of the Rotary scholarships are awarded worldwide, each district awards only one.
Costs not covered by Dr Wills’ first scholarship will be covered by her second, awarded by Oxford University itself.
The Clarendon Fund Scholarship from Oxford is awarded based on academic excellence and will cover Dr Wills’ tuition, college fees and living expenses.
Her parents, Bernie and Ngaire Wills, of Alstonville, said their daughter had wanted to study medicine from her early teens and was looking forward to her time at Oxford.
“She knew what she wanted to do and she knew what she had to do to get there,” Mrs Wills said. “She was excited to be accepted into Oxford, and then to win both scholarships. She is very, very happy.”
“We’re also very proud.
“Hannah is very studious, but she has lived a very full life as well.”
Oxford University is aware of the Rotary scholarship and the second is said to complement the first.
Having studied at the University of NSW, Dr Wills graduated from her six-year undergraduate course with a Bachelor of Surgery and Bac-helor of Medicine in December last year with first-class honours.
When she heads to Oxford she will spend 12 months at the university to complete a Masters Degree in Science, studying Clinical Embryology. When she finishes her time at Oxford, Dr Wills hopes to specialise in obstetrics and gynaecology.
