Hamill relying on IM for world championships berth

SAMANTHA Hamill has missed out on earning a world championship berth in the 200m butterfly despite claiming silver at the Australian championships last night.

The 22-year-old finished second in 2min10.35sec, just over a second behind Brisbane's Madeline Groves (2:09.39).

Hamill's time was outside both the FINA A-qualifying time (2.09.38) and the Australian team's qualifying mark (2.07.32).

The Commonwealth Games silver medallist went into the race as the fastest qualifier, but Groves produced a significant improvement on her semi-final time.

Hamill will have another opportunity to qualify for the world championships in Barcelona when she contests the 400m IM - for which she is seeded first - on Friday.

Meanwhile, Coast duo Brittany Elmslie and Melanie Schlanger have qualified for tonight's 100m freestyle final.

Brisbane's Cate Campbell recorded the fastest time, 52.83sec, in last night's semi-finals - an effort that would have won her gold at the London Olympics.

She finished nearly a second in front of her sister, Bronte, with Elmslie (54.25) and Schlanger (54.32) qualifying fourth and fifth fastest respectively.

Schlanger fractured a rib a month ago while flipping a tyre during a training exercise.

The London relay gold medallist said the injury had affected her ability to breath and she conceded it was hampering her performance at the trials.

She revealed the injury on Twitter after finishing sixth in the 200m freestyle final, telling her followers: "Racing with a fractured rib is quite a challenge, but happy to have swum into selection for the relay in the 200."

Schlanger and Elmslie have both already booked spots at the worlds as members of the 4x200m freestyle relay team.
