Half our homeless under 25

EACH night homeless agencies provide 18,500 Australians with a place to sleep - half of whom are under 25 years old.

The latest report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, released on Wednesday, showed the national rate of people seeking homeless services in the December, 2011, quarter was 44 per 10,000.

Almost 100,000 people Australia-wide sought homeless services.

A staggering 18% were under the age of 10 and 48% were under 25.

Domestic or family violence was the biggest contributor to homelessness in the last quarter but the most common reasons for males were housing crisis or financial difficulties
