LARGE HAIL, DAMAGING WINDS: Severe storms sweep over SEQ

LATEST 7.15pm: The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 6:25 pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar northeast of Chinchilla.

Thunderstorms are moving towards the east. They are forecast to affect the ranges north of Jandowae by 7:25 pm and the area between Jandowae and Kingaroy by 7:55pm.

  • Damaging winds and large hailstones are likely.
  • 4cm size hail was reported at Toowoomba at 5:10pm.
  • 89km/h wind gust was recorded at Toowoomba at 4:45pm.
  • 10 cent size hail was reported at Mount Maroon at 4:35pm [Correction made to the previously noted size].
  • Golf ball size hail was reported at Josephvile at 4:25pm.

6.15PM: There is a severe thunderstorm warning in place for people in Redland City, Brisbane City and parts of Ipswich, Logan, Somerset and Gold Coast council areas.

The Bureau of Meteorology says damaging winds and large hailstones are likely.

At 6:15 pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Lake Manchester and Upper Brookfield.

These thunderstorms are moving towards the east.

They are forecast to possibly affect Brisbane CBD, Slacks Creek, Tingalpa Reservoir and Camp Hill by 6:45 pm and Logan City, Cleveland, Dunwich and Peel Island by 7:15 pm.

Damaging winds and large hailstones are possible.

  • 4cm size hail was reported at Toowoomba at 5:10pm.
  • 89km/h wind gust was recorded at Toowoomba at 4:45pm.
  • 10 cent size hail was reported at Mount Maroon at 4:35pm
  • Golf ball size hail was reported at Josephvile at 4:25pm

 

5.46PM: There is a severe thunderstorm warning in place for people in Ipswich, Logan and parts of Somerset, Scenic Rim, South Burnett, Lockyer Valley, Gold Coast, Brisbane City and Moreton Bay council areas.

The Bureau of Meteorology says destructive winds, large hailstones and heavy rainfall, that may lead to flash flooding, are likely.

At 5:45pm, very dangerous thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Hatton Vale and Marburg.

These thunderstorms are moving towards the east.

These storms are forecast to affect Ipswich, Wacol, Lake Manchester and Upper Brookfield and other western Brisbane suburbs by 6:15pm.

Other severe storms were detected on the weather radar near Laidley, the area between Boonah and Beaudesert, Mulgowie and Grandchester.

They are forecast to affect Beaudesert, the area south of Kingaroy, Tamborine and Peak Crossing by 6:15pm and Logan Village, Bundamba Lagoon and Greenbank by 6:45pm.

 

5.30PM: There is a severe thunderstorm warning in place for people in Ipswich, Logan, Lockyer Valley and parts of Somerset, Scenic Rim, South Burnett, Toowoomba, Gold Coast, Brisbane City and Moreton Bay council areas.

The Bureau of Meteorology says destructive winds, large hailstones and heavy rainfall, that may lead to flash flooding, are likely.

At 5:30pm, these storms were detected on the weather radar near the area south of Helidon and near Laidley.

These thunderstorms are moving towards the east.

They are forecast to affect Marburg, Lowood and Fernvale by 6pm and Enoggera Reservoir, Mount Nebo, Highvale and Samford by 6:30pm.

Other severe storms were detected on the weather radar near Boonah and the area north of Dalby.

They are forecast to affect Beaudesert, the area between Boonah and Beaudesert and the area south of Kingaroy by 6pm and Mount Tamborine, Tamborine, Coomera and Jimboomba by 6:30pm.

 

5PM: Severe Thunderstorm Warning - Southeast Queensland for DESTRUCTIVE WINDS, HEAVY RAINFALL and LARGE HAILSTONES for people in Ipswich, Logan, Scenic Rim, Lockyer Valley, Gold Coast and parts of Somerset, Southern Downs, Dalby, South Burnett, Toowoomba, Redland City and Brisbane City council areas.

At 5:05 pm, very dangerous thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near the area northwest of Toowoomba, Mudgeeraba and Cunninghams Gap.

These thunderstorms are moving towards the east to southeast.

Very dangerous thunderstorms are forecast to affect Boonah and Toowoomba by 5:35 pm and Beaudesert, the area between Boonah and Beaudesert, Kooralbyn and Mulgowie by 6:05 pm.

Other severe thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Gatton, Maroon Dam, Harrisville and Helidon.

They are forecast to affect Laidley, Rosewood, Hatton Vale and Marburg by 5:35 pm and Ipswich, Beenleigh, Logan City and the area south of Kingaroy by 6:05 pm.

Destructive winds, heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and large hailstones are likely.

10cm size hail was reported at Mount Maroon at 4:35pm.

Golf ball size hail was reported at Josephvile at 4:25pm.

 

4.40PM: Severe Thunderstorm Warning - Southeast Queensland for DESTRUCTIVE WINDS, HEAVY RAINFALL and LARGE HAILSTONES for people in Ipswich, Scenic Rim, Lockyer Valley and parts of Logan, Somerset, Southern Downs, Dalby, South Burnett, Toowoomba, Gold Coast and Brisbane City council areas.

At 4:35 pm, very dangerous thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Warwick and the area southeast of Dalby.

These thunderstorms are moving towards the east.

Very dangerous thunderstorms are forecast to affect the area east of Warwick, the area northwest of Toowoomba and Jondaryan by 5:05 pm and possibly Toowoomba, Helidon and Highfields by 5:35 pm.

Other severe thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Beaudesert, the area south of Warwick, the area south of Toowoomba, Jandowae, Clifton and Rathdowney.

They are forecast to affect the area southeast of Warwick, Nerang, Southport and Mount Tamborine by 5:05 pm and Laidley, Mulgowie, Grandchester and Rosewood by 5:35 pm.

Destructive winds, heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and large hailstones are likely.

 

4.05PM: Severe Thunderstorm Warning - Southeast Queensland for DESTRUCTIVE WINDS, HEAVY RAINFALL and LARGE HAILSTONES for people in Scenic Rim and parts of Ipswich, Logan, Southern Downs, Dalby, Toowoomba, Lockyer Valley and Gold Coast council areas.

At 4:05 pm, very dangerous thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Border Ranges National Park, Rathdowney and the area west of Clifton.

These thunderstorms are moving towards the east to southeast.

Very dangerous thunderstorms are forecast to affect the area northwest of Warwick, Allora and Clifton by 4:35 pm and Warwick and the area southeast of Warwick by 5:05 pm.

Other severe thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Cunninghams Gap, Pittsworth and the area west of Toowoomba.

They are forecast to affect Beaudesert, Dalby, the area southwest of Toowoomba and the area south of Dalby by 4:35 pm and Laravale, Jondaryan and Bowenville by 5:05 pm.

Destructive winds, heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and large hailstones are likely.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:

  • Move your car under cover or away from trees.
  • Secure loose outdoor items.
  • Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
  • Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
  • Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
