Gympie region man admits to child rape, indecent dealing

CALICO Creek man Ross William Thompson has reversed his "not guilty" plea and admitted to the rape of a child under 16 at Kandanga in 2011.

Judge Glen Cash discharged the Gympie District Court jury about 2.15pm on Wednesday, after finding that a trial would not now be needed.

Thompson, 45, had pleaded not guilty earlier to charges that he raped a child under the age of 16 between October 31 and December 31, 2011 and indecently dealt with her between January 1 and April 1, 2012 at Kandanga.

He also denied indecently dealing with her again nearly five years later at Calico Creek, between December 21 and 24, 2016.

Prior to the jury being empanelled, Judge Glen Cash suggested defence lawyers speak to Thompson about the sentencing discount which might apply in cases where a guilty plea saved stress for the complainant and cost for the state, including taking time already served on remand into account.

When the jury returned after lunch, defence lawyers indicated that Thompson would change his plea to "guilty."

Judge Cash explained to jurors that this meant there would be no need for a trial and their services would not be required to determine guilt or innocence.

He adjourned the case for sentencing submissions from prosecution and defence representatives on Thursday and said this would not be before 11am.

The judge will then pass sentence on Thompson.
