Gym members left cold after closure

THERE'S a lot of pent up energy getting around Coffs Harbour looking for an outlet - the sudden closure of a gym has left 'members' steamed up.

A number of regulars arrived at the Jetty Fitness Centre yesterday expecting to take a class only to find a locked door and a sign saying “business closed” with a phone number to reach management on.

“I rang him...and he said he can't discuss it,” Jan Morrison said.

“We're devastated,” Vicki Sim added.

Mrs Christensen spoke to the former owner David Ahern and was told that a letter would be sent out - she received after she found out the gym's doors were closed.

The letter stated: “Over the past five months, memberships at The Jetty Fitness Centre have decreased by over 160 members. This has placed a severe strain on finances and has caused the gym to become insolvent. It is illegal to trade whilst in this situation so it is with much regret we are forced to close the business.”

Mrs Morrison renewed her membership on Friday at a cost of $485 and was concerned about a refund, although she has been assured my Mr Ahern that she will receive a refund. Mr Ahern said only this yesterday: “All the members have been contacted in writing.”
