Speaker looks at violence against women

KAREN Willis will be the guest speaker at the 2011 Zonta International Women’s Day Breakfast in Coffs Harbour on March 8.

Karen is the executive officer of the NSW Rape Crisis Centre.

She has worked in the field of violence against women for 30 years.

During that time she has advocated improvements in the criminal justice and service provision response for those who have experienced such violence.

She has also worked to raise issues in relation to violence against women in the community and to prevent such violence occurring.

Karen is clear that it is every person’s human right to live their life free from violence and when violence occurs it is their right to receive compassionate professional assistance in their recovery and full redress for the crime through the criminal justice system.

The Rape Crisis Centre provides a 24/7 telephone and online crisis response and counselling service for anyone in NSW whose life has been affected by sexual violence.

It also provides counselling from seven locations around the State for women who were sexually assaulted when they were children.

More recently the centre became the clinical service provider for the national 24/7 telephone and online counselling service for anyone who is at risk of or who has experienced sexual assault, domestic or family violence.

Lorraine Gordon, the executive director of Economic Security 4 Women S4W, will launch the new advertisement for the Equal Pay Day Campaign at this breakfast and there will also be short talks from two young women winners of the Zonta awards to local high school students.

The IWD Breakfast will be held from 7am on March 8 at C.ex Coffs.

Tickets are $30 from C.ex Coffs and Zonta members.
