Grim Reaper puts finishing touch on feature race

RACING: Grim Reaper produced a startling finish to claim the spoils in the feature race at the Mother's Day Races at Corbould Park on Sunday.

With Paul Hammersley astride, the Steven O'Dea-trained charge flashed home to overwhelm Soaring Heart and Pistolero by a nose on the line.

A $6 chance with Ladbrokes, he rushed to the line after lumbering along midfield.

Hammersley said he had expected Grim Reaper to fare well in the Hot 91.1 Ladies Oaks Day 1 June QTIS Two-Years-Old Handicap (1400m) after a recent sixth placing in the Listed Dalrello Stakes at Doomben (1200m).

"His work in trials was good going into that run," he said.

"It was a pretty sharp field that day but his run was quite good. He finished off all the way to the finishing line.

"The drop back in company, to some sort of degree, was obviously a major factor today.

"We were happy going into the last start and I was pretty confident coming into today."

Local jockeys Damian Browne and Tiffani Brooker enjoyed the meet, claiming two wins apiece on the six-race card, while local trainer Stuart Kendick also claimed two victories.

Browne was on the Doomben 10,000 runner-up Impending on Saturday.

They finished behind English in the Group 1 $700,000 race, over 1200m.

The Sunshine Coast Turf Club will host a Ladies Oaks Day on June 1.
