Greens mayor could block filming of Aquaman movie

AQUAMAN is facing a new villain in the form of a Greens party mayor threatening to block filming on the $160 million production.

Tweed Shire Council Mayor Katie Milne has called a special meeting of the Tweed Coast Reserves Trust, which will look at whether to refuse or grant Warner Bros the permit to film at Hastings Point, south of Kingscliff.

If the permit is not given, it could spell a major disruption for the production, with filming expected to start on Monday.

The council already granted the company in-principle filming approval, if the producers agreed to certain conditions.

That included consultation with the Hastings Point community and protection of a pandanus palm that was proposed for removal.

Cr Milne did not return a request for comment yesterday. Cr Ron Cooper, who seconded Cr Milne's call for the "urgent" meeting, said the production company had been secretive and people in the Hastings Point community felt they had not been consulted.

"It is fundamentally a consultation problem," he said.

"It (the meeting) will be about that - it won't be about stopping it. It could have gone that way, but even the people at Hastings Point don't want to stop it.

"It's not going to be throwing Aquaman out, but it is a shot across the bow of the organisation that if they don't get the consultation right … this is the sort of outcome you get."

Cr Cooper said Cr Milne had raised concerns about the environmental impacts the film shoot - believed to be for eight weeks - would have on the headland.

Cr Warren Polglase said the controversy would hurt the region's reputation for filming.

"Council was about to issue the licence and our Greenie mayor decided to call a meeting to try to squash it," he said.

A spokesman from Create NSW, which is the NSW Government's arts policy and funding body, said Warner Bros had met all of the required conditions.

"Create NSW has worked to help Warner Bros meet all the conditions of their Aquaman filming permit application to Tweed Shire Council, which will be presented at the council meeting tomorrow," he said.

A spokesman for the Aquaman production said there would be no comment until after the meeting.
