Greens candidate: Cycleway needed
GREENS candidate for Coffs Harbour City Council, Craig Christie, strongly supports the need for improved and more varied transport options for the Northern Beaches as a key focus for the local Greens, including the proposed cycleway.
"With all of the road construction currently taking place it is disappointing that delivering a quality cycleway is not considered worthwhile by the Roads and Maritime Services, (RMS) or appropriately supported by the current Mayor and Council," Mr Christie said.
The Northern Beaches Alliance recently appeared in the Advocate and has undertaken to contact the state Roads Minister Duncan Gay in an attempt to have a dedicated cycleway built from Sapphire to Woolgoolga.
Mr Christie believes there should be greater community support behind such a campaign.
"The Greens support these efforts of Rod McKelvey and the Northern Beaches Alliance in pushing for a dedicated cycleway, rather than the piecemeal approach currently planned," he said.
"My kids, my wife and I would love to be able to ride safely in the Northern Beaches, as is the case in other parts of Coffs Harbour.
"A Greens Mayor and councillors would be strong advocates for more varied and healthy transport options that can connect people in our community to services and each other, as well as provide opportunities for tourism ventures.
"The Council needs to assist and truly represent the community in its efforts to secure a much needed cycleway."
