Green thumbs aplenty at Narranga
IT may be a strange way to spend a lunch break, but for garden club kids at Narranga Public School there’s nothing better than getting your hands in the dirt.
The garden club is made up of student volunteers managed by groundskeeper Peter Cairns.
They have been busy planting tomatoes, carrots, zucchini, broad beans with cleverly placed garlic chives and marigolds to ward off the insects.
The organic produce will be used in the school’s canteen.
The club has been running for seven years and sustainable gardening is the group's latest endeavour.
Year 3 student Rashana Wilkinson said sustainable gardening was a natural way to grow vegetables and plants.
“It means you work with the environment and don’t use any harsh chemicals,” Rashana said.
“My favourite part is helping the younger kids with planting and teaching them about being healthy.”
Year 6 student Jarryd Hagarty said they planted cow peas to put nitrogen back into the soil.
“We also have a frog pond. We started with tadpoles and now we have green tree frogs, which we feed boiled cabbage,” Jarryd said.
