Balcony collapse injures three
KARINA Marshall and Sarah Apps were still visibly shaken yesterday after watching three of their friends fall from a first-storey balcony the night before.
And the girls are disappointed the estate agent managing the property apparently did not listen to warnings about what they described as a faulty and ageing balcony railing.
The incident happened about 2am on Sunday morning when Karina, Sarah and a small group of friends were relaxing on the balcony of Karina's home.
“We were sitting in a hammock and a few of our friends were leaning against the railing,” Karina said.
“We heard a loud ‘crunch' and it all happened really quickly.
“We saw it all collapse backwards and raced over and saw them lying on the ground.”
Sarah said it was an incredibly shocking event to watch unfold.
“We started screaming – we couldn't even breathe,” Sarah said
Karina said she had previously spoken to her real estate agent requesting the railing be fixed, said she was told to get some nails and fix it herself.
One of those injured in the collapse – a male – suffered a serious fracture and a head injury and was taken by ambulance to Coffs Harbour Hospital in a serious condition.
A young woman was also taken to Coffs Harbour Hospital in a serious condition after suffering multiple fractures and a head injury.
A third victim – a male – was conveyed to Grafton Base Hospital with minor injuries.
