GOTYE took out the top honour at the 2011 J Awards last night.

The musician Wally De Backer's third album Making Mirrors was awarded Album of the Year, establishing him as one of our finest songwriters.

He told triple j presenters this morning that his music career had taken off so quickly in the last two years and he was a long way from when he sent the radio station in his demo ten years ago.

Music Video of the Year went to Hermitude for the flip clip to the song Speak of the Devil which was directed by Emma Tomelty.

The video starts with one man dancing in a room before a bevy of dancers fill the screen, bouncing between frames.

The final award, Unearthed Artist of the Year went to Ball Park Music.

The Brisbane band began 2011 opening the Gold Coast Big Day Out through an unearthed competition and its funky tracks like I Fly and Sad Rude Future Dude began attracting ears of triple j listeners.

Let's see how the artists go in next year's Hottest 100 on Australia Day, with Gotye's hits tipped to feature heavily towards the lower end of the countdown.
