Google’s build-your-own Cardboard glasses

WHILE the Oculus Rift remains in its indefinite development phase and Microsoft's HoloLens promises to change our lives, some day, Google has lost patience and released their own virtual reality goggles - made of cardboard.

For a trivial fraction of the cost of everything in and planned for the market, Google's developed a way of folding everyday cardboard into a wearable headpiece that lets people use their phone as a display similar to the one in an Oculus Rift.

Possibly the most interesting aspect of Cardboard is that you don't need to buy it. Visit Google.com/get/cardboard/ for instructions to build one from cardboard and household items you probably already have.

If you want to buy one, third-party manufacturers are listed on Google's site, with pre- built modules starting about $15.

So far, the apps that have been released for Cardboard are visually impressive but the real depth of the platform is yet to be fully plumbed.
