Golden girls in action tonight

SUNSHINE Coast golden girl Melanie Schlanger has a busy day ahead in the pool with the 100m freestyle and the 4x200m freestyle relay to be held tonight.

Schlanger will line up in heat seven against Dutch speedster Ranomi Kromowidjojo, who has the fastest time in the world this year, and fellow gold medallist Cate Campbell faces Swede Sarah Sjostrom and Brit Francesca Halsall in heat six.

Based on her performance in the shorter relay, Noosa product Brittany Elmslie is also expected to swim in the heats of the 4x200m freestyle relay as the Australian women look to go back to back.

Schlanger and Elsmlie finished third and fourth in the 200m respectively at the national championships behind Bronte Barratt and Kylie Palmer. Also in contention for a relay spot are Stephanie Rice, Angie Bainbridge and Jade Nielsen.

Pelican Waters' Tessa Wallace will be the first Coast swimmer in action when she lines up in the heats of the 200m breaststroke.

Wallace's commitment and determination to overcome illness and qualify has attracted praise from the upper echelons of the Australian swimming fraternity, including former national coach Laurie Lawrence. Wallace, 19, the Commonwealth Games silver medallist, will need all of that commitment and determination tonight in a star-studded heat headlined by American breaststroke queen Rebecca Soni.

Kawana Waters' Samantha Hamill will also have her work cut out in heat three of the 200m butterfly. She lines up alongside Chinese star Jiao Liuyang, who has the second-fastest time in the world this year.

The Peter Gartrell-coached Hamill is joined in the event by Jessicah Schipper. Unfortunately, she showed the signs of an injury-riddled preparation when she performed poorly in the 100m butterfly earlier in the week.
