Young girl breaks both legs after being struck by car

A YOUNG girl struck by a car while crossing the road in the city centre late this afternoon reportedly had her legs run-over in a nasty peak hour accident.

The girl, who was believed to be eight years of age, was hit by a car on the roadway on Harbour Dr towards the Pacific Highway intersection on Friday around 3.40pm.

A witness to the accident said the girl was in immense pain and semi-conscious after the accident.

Concerned bystanders phoned emergency services and ambulance paramedics were quickly on scene.

"The young girl, estimated to be aged between five and eight years of age was treated for fractures to both of her legs," an Ambulance Media spokeswoman said.

"It appears her legs were run over by a passing vehicle.

Paramedics rushed the girl to the Coffs Harbour Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident.

Witnesses said it was fortunate the vehicles involved were driving at slow speeds.
