Collett double sets up Ghosts win over Comets

RUGBY LEAGUE: The Grafton Ghosts have come away from a wet and wild afternoon in Coffs Harbour with the two points after downing the Comets 22-10.

The Ghosts were licking their lips in the early stages of the contest after high-flying centre Dylan Collett crossed twice in the first five minutes under a threatening sky.

It was a quick shift of the ball on both occasions with the Ghosts halves chiming in to utilise the extra man on the left.

Collett used his speed and strength to get around his opposite number Ryan Gilkinson to plant the ball, but that was all the spoils Grafton would taste in the first half as Coffs Harbour mounted a fightback.

In the greasy conditions it became a battle of attrition between the two Group 2 heavyweights as each forward pack battled for ascendancy.

After a string of penalties going their way, the Comets built momentum and field position before five-eighth Scott Street fell through the Ghosts goal-line defence to slide across.

But that was the last work for the scoreboard attendant in the first half as the rain began to fall. Collett had a late chance to trouble the scorers, breaking free 40 metres from the Coffs line but spilt the ball as he moved around to plant the ball under the sticks.

The rain continued to fall into the second half as it became a battle to hold on to the pill. Both side coughed up easy possession with the line in sight.

It was not until a streaking Jayden Connors broke into back field for the Ghosts, and looked certain to score before a covering Street pulled him down.

From the ensuing play, Ghosts' second rower Adam Slater crashed across next to the uprights. The Ghosts had a 10-point gap and looked to lock down the play.

But Shayde Perham streaked away for a late consolation effort, before Jayden Connors dived on a loose ball to cap off a wet and blustery afternoon at Coffs Harbour.

SCORELINE

Grafton Ghosts 22 (Dylan Collett 2, Adam Slater, Jayden Connors tries; Jayden Connors 3 goals) def Coffs Harbour Comets 10 (Scott Street, Shayde Perham tries; Nathan Curry goal).
