‘Ghost’ heart attack saves 29-year-old man's life

A "ghost" heart attack saved James Wragg's life.

Three years ago the 29 year old had all the right ingredients for a life that was short and damaging.

It was habits like buying 6 bottles of 1.25L soft drinks each week and eating fast food regularly that saw James stack the weight on until he weighed 130kg.

He was told if he didn't change his emotional and binge eating habits he would be lucky to be alive in five years time.

You wouldn't think it now though when you see a 30kg lighter Mr Wragg sweating it out at the gym.

"One day I was walking home from the doctor and the muscles in my chest just felt like they were contracting and restricted," he said.

"It gave me a hell of a fright. I thought I was having a heart attack.

"I went to the hospital and I was told it was a ghost heart attack because my heart couldn't pump blood around my body."

Kicking habits that had lasted years was most difficult for Mr Wragg.

Suffering with depression at the time he had an unhealthy relationship with emotional eating - indulging in soft drink, chocolates, sweet treats and fast food regularly.

But now he's created new habits, exercising almost every day and cooking his own meals.

The supermarket shelf filler has a combination of exercise regimes, and now he's even starting to increase the weights he's using on machines and bars.

"I would go to work and buy a can of coke, a mars bar and a packet of chips for the night.

"I never want to go down that path again.

"That doctor's visit was the warning sign I needed."

Mr Wragg weighs 96kg now and his goal is 90.

At first he felt uncomfortable and embarrassed when he stepped foot in the gym.

"I started to channel that aggression I had into using weights," he said.

"A gym should be a place you feel comfortable in so you can do the exercise you need to do without feeling judged by others.

"If I had any advice to people trying to lose weight it would be not to give up."
