Letter to the Editor - July 11: Get hands off our airport

THE article in the Advocate on Wednesday about the Coffs Harbour Airport, addresses all those things that have resulted in our airport being the best regional airport in the country, as being less than savoury.

The current management, who are not council officers, has taken a sleepy little airport and turned it into something we are all proud of.

No one likes to have to pay to park, but at least you can now get a parking spot and a lot cheaper rate than you can at Mascot, which has been cited as a model that we should aspire to.

The cost of advertising is obviously acceptable to those businesses that do and is "contentious", a term used by the current director, because he doesn't have control.

The development of an industrial precinct is a smart use of our asset.

All buildings and infrastructure will need to comply with guidelines for environment, including flooding.

I don't want to see our airport go the way of Mascot, I don't want to see profits denied to us and I certainly don't want to see the cost of using the airport sky rocket.

I also don't want to see the waste of precious money investigating a proposal, which is purely to aggrandise those pushing it.

The message should be loud and clear, "Hands off our airport".

Peter Farquhar
