Germans can't get enough of Mackay

GERMANS have just fallen in love with Mackay.

Figures released by Mackay Tourism show residents from the home of the Oktoberfest have come here in droves, with 11,000 visitors from the European country visiting the Mackay region during the year ending June 2018. That number makes Germany the region's leading international tourist market.

In the same period, visitors from other European countries made up the majority of Mackay's total international visitors, with about 36,000 calling the EU home. This represents a jump of 40.8 per cent.

In total, the number of international tourists visiting the Mackay region grew by 24.3 per cent compared to the same time last year.

Mackay Tourism said in total 56,000 international travellers visited the Mackay area in the year ending June 2018, generating $16 million in spending.

Cape Hillsborough Nature Tourist Park owner Renae Atherton said the park's bookings mirrored the spike of German visitors. She said these accounted for 13 per cent of total bookings.

"We have visitors from all over the world, but particularly Europeans who seek out our untouched wildlife experiences,” she said.

The continued growth for this period marks seven successive quarters of domestic and international visitor growth for the region.

Mackay Tourism said it expected growth to continue for both the international and domestic markets.
