Geitz leads Firebirds into another ANZ netball final

NETBALL: Laura Geitz can lead the Queensland Firebirds to a historic third premiership victory in the ANZ Championships after they beat Southern Steel in the semi-final in Brisbane today.

The Allora goalkeeper has been the on-court leader for a Firebirds team in the past four grand finals.

If they win at the weekend, the Firebirds will be the first team to win three ANZ Championship titles.

Today, the Firebirds won 67-64.

They will play the winner of tomorrow’s second semi-final, between Magic and the Swifts, in the grand final this weekend. The Firebirds have already beaten Swifts in this year’s finals series.

While Geitz will be playing in her fourth successive grand final, goal defender and former Warwick West student Clare McMeniman missed the second grand final appearance, incidentally the one where the Firebirds finished on the wrong side of the scorecard.

The win today was the 18th in succession for the Firebirds at home.

Goalshooter Romelda Aiken landed 57 goals from 68 attempts for the home team.
