Garden grows goodwill

COFFS Coast residents continue to open their hearts to help the Queensland flood victims.

The latest local organisation to climb aboard is the Friends of the Botanic Garden, which has agreed to donate the proceeds from the garden cafe for three days to the appeal.

Those days are Friday, January 21, Saturday, January 22, and Sunday, January 23.

The Cheesecake Shop, Cutty's Cakes, Direct Wholesale Services, IGA at the Jetty and Woolworths have agreed to donate cheesecakes, scones, coffee, milk and cream and the Friends will make cakes and biscuits as well as donating their time.

The cafe opening times are 10am to 3pm on Friday and Saturday and 1pm to 3pm on Sunday.

“The Friends urge patrons to dig deep for the flood appeal,” said spokeswoman Eve Colley.

“All coffees, teas and cakes are available for a donation.

“This is a great time to help our flooded neighbours, enjoy a coffee at the gardens and go for a walk in the Botanic Garden.”

Elsewhere, St John Ambulance volunteers from throughout NSW are in Brisbane to provide first-aid to people injured as a result of cleaning up and moving flood debris.

More than 20 local volunteers join 60 St John workers from Queensland and Victoria already on site.

Their main roles will be to help the Queensland Ambulance Service with the treatment of those injured in the recovery effort as well as maintaining first aid support in evacuation centres.

“It's extraordinary to see our volunteers from across the country rallying together to help out the Brisbane community at a time of great need,” said St John NSW Commissioner Warren Glenny.

“St John is assessing the possibility of sending teams from the ACT and South Australia if the need arises.”
