Winning garden grows from bare paddock to bright bloom

PAUL and Noela Rubb's amazing Haden garden has taken out the Country Grand Champion award with the pair saying the garden was the best it had looked.

The yard includes bright feature areas and stone edging to form a winning combination.

Mr Rubb said after planting in late May tough dry conditions made their garden extra challenging with the pair working together to keep the ground moist.

In July the conditions changed again, bringing just enough sporadic rain to keep the gardens in what became their peak condition.

The pair moved 10 years ago from Acland to their Haden property and began entering the competition six years ago.

Their stunning yard is a result of years of hard work and long hours.

Mrs Rubb said she was proud to win the top prize, after starting with just a bare paddock.

They also won first place award for Large Homestead Garden, Best Display of Flowering Annuals and Bulbs, and Small Space Garden or Bushhouse.

Judge Brian Sams said visitors to Toowoomba and residents should visit the country gardens.

He said the gardens were spread out in the greater Toowoomba region, but were well worth a look.

"The gardeners are so welcoming and friendly, and we saw a great number of innovative gardens," he said.

"It was a very diverse range on show and the scores came very close."

He said many of the gardens had dynamic water-wise features to help produce stunning bright and colourful areas.

Last year's Country Grand Champion winners were David and Gay Kearey from Pittsworth with a garden for all seasons which included roses, carnations and veges.
