Game of Thrones reigns supreme over Emmy nominations

THE action-packed sixth season of Game of Thrones has topped this year's Emmy Award nominations.

The popular fantasy series earned 23 nods including first-time individual acting nominations for Kit Harington and Maisie Williams.

But snapping closely at its heels on 22 nominations is Ryan Murphy's acclaimed crime mini-series The People V OJ Simpson: American Crime Story.

It's the most-nominated first season of a show since ER earned 23 nominations in 1995.

American political parody Veep, starring Seinfeld's Julia Louis-Dreyfus, is the most nominated comedy on 17.

HBO was the most nominated network, while Netflix earned a total of 54 nominations for its shows including Orange is the New Black, House of Cards, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Master of Nothing.

USA Network's breakout hit Mr Robot, season two of which premiered in Australia yesterday on Presto, also earned its first Emmy nominations.

Jimmy Kimmel will host the 68th annual awards from Los Angeles on September 18.
