Game-changing METS project one step closer

IF ALL goes to plan, a state-of-the-art METS hub will be up and running in the southern corner of Mackay early next year.

Mackay Regional Council submitted a development application for its proposed Resource Centre of Excellence on Thursday, August 1.

The multi-million dollar vocational training facility, to be erected at the corner of Crichtons Road and Michelmore St, Paget, will be a game-changing project for the Mackay region.

One of the main features of the RCE will be an underground mining simulator, which will be used to train the future resource sector workforce. Other features of the facility will include classrooms, induction areas, a laboratory and workshops.

Resource Industry Network general manager Adrienne Rourke said the RCE would put Mackay on the map as a METS centre.

"The RCE will bring together industry players for training, testing and collaboration and will give Mackay the chance to showcase its METS capabilities nationally and on the world stage," Ms Rourke said.

"There will be endless opportunities for research as well, which will allow major suppliers, the university and CSIRO to take advantage of its testing facilities.

"Opportunities for innovation, skills training and advertising are jobs also a part of the supply chain which will attract and retain young people to the region."

Ms Rourke said she believed this project would re-establish confidence in Mackay's economy.

"Businesses are going to want to be a part of what's happening in Mackay."

Mackay mayor Greg Williamson said the establishment of the RCE would cement Mackay as one of the priority cities for Australia's resource sector.

"To have a facility that focuses on training for the sector and creating innovation is something we have wanted to do for a long time in Mackay," Cr Williamson said.

"The Resource Centre of Excellence is going to attract serious METS players within the resources sector to the region.

"As for when the project will start, well the DA has been submitted and we're very near calling for tenders and getting the thing underway, which is very exciting."
