IT WAS garden mania at the Botanic Gardens Open Day this morning, with hundreds of residents taking advantage of the cool weather for a family day out.

The line up to the council's free native plant tent stretched as far as the eye could see, with ratepayers taking advantage of the brilliant initiative.

Each ratepayer was able to take home four native plants as part of the Mackay council's native plant program.

The program is designed to encourage residents to incorporate more native plants into their gardens.

Nursery supervisor at the Mackay natural environment centre Sue McCormack helped coordinate the Botanic Gardens event.

She said she was thrilled with the turnout.

"We prepared about 4000 plants to give away today and I don't think we will have any left,” she said.

"We've provided local native plants so they are resilient to the region's climate and they will attract birds, insects and bees.”

Ms McCormack said the event was all about conservation, promoting the environment and encouraging people to get in the garden.

If you missed out on collecting your free native plants today, head to the Mackay natural environment centre at 6 Swayne Street, North Mackay on one of the following days:

  • Friday, July 12 and Saturday, July 13
  • Friday, August 9 and Saturday, August 10
  • Friday, September 6 and Saturday, September 7
  • Friday, October 4 and Saturday, October 5

The centre opens from 9am to midday.
